HOLYOKE, Mass. – A five-goal second half helped the hosting Mount Holyoke College Lyons pull away from Southern Vermont College for a 7-0 win Thursday afternoon in non-conference, season-opening women's soccer action.
MHC (1-0) put home a pair of scores in the opening 45 minutes before using a strong second period to put it out of the Mountaineers' reach.
Southern Vermont (0-1) next holds its home opener on Sunday, welcoming Dean College to Everett Field for a 1 p.m. non-league contest.
With a 2-0 lead after the opening half, McKenna Lamb (Redland, Calif.) scored two goals within six minutes to push the home team to a four-goal advantage. In the 58th minute, sophomore Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) sent a pass forward to Lamb who created space away from the defender and scored from the center of the box.
Southern Vermont had a nice chance early in the second half as sophomore Molly Madore (Higganum, Conn.) broke into the zone, sending a beautiful cross from the right side. SVC was unable to connect, however, as Mount Holyoke preserved the shutout.
MHC went on to add to its lead, finding the back of the net three more times to start the season on a strong note.
Mountaineer junior keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made several outstanding saves throughout the game, finishing with 16 total including 10 in the second half of the loss (0-1).
