FRANKLIN, Mass. – Southern Vermont College fell 3-0 Monday night in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball match at Pieri Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs grabbed the first two sets by 25-14 and 25-16 margins to take a comfortable lead in the contest; Dean then clipped SVC 25-19 in the third to sweep the first meeting of the season between the two sides.
The Mountaineers (0-11, 0-6 NECC) are back in action on Saturday with a pair of matches at Johnson & Wales University; SVC will first take on Emmanuel College at 1 p.m. before going up against the hosting Wildcats at 3 p.m.
Southern Vermont sophomore Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) led the visitors with 10 kills on the night while tying the team-high of eight digs. Junior Isaiah Backels (Derry, N.H.) registered another eight kills in addition to 13 assists, two kills, and two service aces as senior captain El Olivares (Miami, Fla.) tallied seven digs and six kills.
Dean grabbed the first three points of the opening set and never let go of the lead. Down 13-5, SVC rattled off four points in-a-row behind an Olivares kill and consecutive Backels aces, but an 8-1 Bulldog run finished the frame and put the hosts on top in the match.
Hayward notched a pair of kills to help his team go on a 4-1 spurt and make it a 7-5 Dean edge in the second game, but the Bulldogs took the next three for some extra breathing room. A 5-1 SVC run—highlighted by kills from Olivares and sophomore Hans Resignac (Philadelphia, Pa.)—cut it down to a three-point deficit, and service would be traded until Hayward's fifth kill of the set made it an 18-16 DC advantage. The hosts seized the momentum and won the next six, however, to take the game and go up 2-0 on the night.
Dean slowly padded its lead in the front-end of the third to go on top by seven (16-9), but Southern Vermont would stay in it and start to close down the separation. After Olivares landed a kill during a 6-3 stretch which got the Mountaineers within four, however, the Bulldogs won four of the next six to close out the victory.
