ALBANY, N.Y. – Southern Vermont College fell 3-0 to The Sage Colleges Wednesday night in non-conference men's volleyball action at Kahl Gymnasium.

The hosting Gators took the evening with straight-set scores of 25-12, 25-10, and 25-11.

Next up for the Mountaineers (0-7) is a Saturday home doubleheader against Pine Manor College— first serve slated for 1 p.m.

SVC freshman Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) tallied five kills to lead the team while junior Elmer Olivares (Miami, Fla.) was right behind with four. Freshman Bryan Bernal (Riverside, Calif.) notched 10 assists, two digs and a service ace, and senior Jeff James (Bowie, Md.) had three kills in the effort.

James put down his first kill to make it a tight 3-2 Sage lead early in the first, but the hosts then stormed to a huge upper hand with 10 unanswered points. Southern Vermont got three of the next four with the help of two Olivares kills, but a 5-1 Gator spurt sent the separation back to double digits. Sage scored three-straight points on two occasions late in the frame to close out the opening-set win.

Hayward ended a string of five-consecutive Gator points with his second kill of the night, only to see the hosts take to an 8-1 run to pad their cushion. Hayward and sophomore Marv Figaro (New York City, N.Y.) teamed up for back-to-back kills before scoring was traded in the backend of the set as Sage maintained its upper hand. The hosts closed out the game on a 5-1 spurt to go up 2-0 on the night and put the Mountaineers on their heels.

The Gators scored five of the first six points of the third stanza, and they added a 6-1 run to go up by seven early on. An Olivares kill gave serve back to the visitors, but Sage would slowly push it up to a 10-point lead to put the match victory in sight. Hayward added a late kill before the hosts took to a 5-2 contest-ending run to finish off the sweep.
