ATTLEBORO, Mass. – After a record-breaking performance, Southern Vermont College senior Mike Pierre (Melrose, N.Y.) was named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending January 7, 2018 as announced by the league on Monday.
The honor took into account all games played since December 18. In that stretch, SVC played three times which saw Pierre average 24.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per contest. His best showing came this past Wednesday in a Southern Vermont win against Mass. College of Liberal Arts when he dropped 47 points to set a new Mountaineer single-game record; the senior went a stellar 17-25 (68 percent) from the floor while notching 31 points in the first half and finishing with four 3-pointers. He is the only player from the NECC to score at least 40 points this season, and his mark is tied for the eighth-most in NCAA Division III this year.
Prior to that, Pierre registered 20 points and six boards against a strong SUNY Cortland team on December 18 during the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout in Miami Beach. He finished the three-game stretch with a 50 percent (27-54) clip from the floor including a 40 percent (6-15) mark from downtown.
Pierre was joined in garnering Conference honors on Monday by freshman teammate KJ Kinsey (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) who was selected as the league's Rookie of the Week.
Pierre and the Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday with their first NECC game of the year when the squad visits Wheelock College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
