SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College baseball team fell 5-1 Tuesday afternoon to Skidmore College in non-conference play at Castle Diamond.
The Thoroughbreds put up a lone run in the second, and they added another three in the fourth. The hosts tallied a single score in the sixth before SVC came back with a lone run of its own in the top of the seventh. Neither team could cross the plate the rest of the way as Skidmore closed out the victory.
Southern Vermont (7-23) is next in action on Thursday as the Mountaineers head to Becker College for a 4 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference first pitch; SVC will bat as the home team in the league contest.
Mountaineer freshman third baseman Cameron Clark (Fulton, N.Y.) was 2-3 while sophomore center fielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) went 1-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in his hometown. SVC sophomore first baseman Joseph Braim (Schuylerville, N.Y.) also turned in a 1-3 showing at the plate in the effort.
Southern Vermont freshman Nick Gambardella (Hollywood, Fla.) took the loss (0-3) after striking out three in six innings with the start.
Stacey singled down the line to lead-off the game, and he would move up to second before being erased at third. SVC left a runner on, but Gambardella got the hosts to do the same in the home half of the inning.
After the Mountaineers left one aboard in the second, Skidmore struck with a two-out single to right. SC then scored three times in the fourth with a solo homer and two other hits.
Skidmore scored once in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-0 difference—only to see Southern Vermont come back with one of its own in the top of the seventh. Stacey got on base with a hit by pitch, and he would steal second before moving to third on a ground out. Junior shortstop John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) then tagged one deep enough to right for Stacey to come home and end the shutout.
The Mountaineers would leave a runner on base through the next seven outs, however, for the Thoroughbreds to close out the win.
