HOLYOKE, Mass. – Scoring was scarce Sunday afternoon as Southern Vermont College fell 2-0 to Elms College at MacKenzie Stadium in the finale of the two sides' New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball series.
Neither squad could cross the dish until the Blazers used a solo homer and an RBI-double in the fourth for the 2-0 advantage. That would be the only scoring of the day as EC kept the Mountaineers off the board to sweep the weekend series.
Southern Vermont (7-22, 5-7 NECC) is back in action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. non-conference first pitch at Skidmore College.
SVC sophomore centerfielder Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.), sophomore catcher Dan Mason (Bloomingdale, N.J.), and freshman right fielder Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam, N.Y.) were all 2-4 at the dish in the effort.
Mountaineer senior righty Dylan Angelo (Amsterdam, N.Y.) went a solid eight innings from the bump as he allowed just the two runs on seven hits and no walks in the loss (2-4).
Mason tagged a one-out single into right in the top of the first, but he would get stranded there to be the first of eight runners that the visitors would leave on base. The game saw 13 consecutive outs after Mason's hits as Angelo started the game with two-straight 1-2-3 innings on the hill.
Stacey broke up that streak in the third as he drove a single to right with two down—only to see Elms get the final out of the frame. EC would then strike in the fourth to get all that the hosts needed for the victory. A solo home run broke the scoreless drought, and a pair of two-out hits brought the second Blazer around to touch the plate.
Southern Vermont nearly had an answer in the ensuing frame as Pingitore and Stacey tallied hits to load the bases with two outs. Elms worked out of it, however, to keep the lead intact. Both teams left runners aboard in the next couple innings before Angelo retired the EC side in order in the seventh. Mason led-off the eighth with a single to center, but he would move no further as the Blazers got back in the dugout. SVC would then go down in order in the top of the ninth for the hosts to close out the sweep.
